Chapter 3

Undisclosed Location

The sophisticated man leaned back in his chair, as he scanned the check before him on the big screen. His gaze narrowed, and his jaw dropped. The numbers on screen seemed to blur for a moment, but they were undeniably clear. Each month, he had carefully deposited a randomly selected sum into a newly created account, maintaining an air of quiet control, almost as if he were playing a game with fate. But now, as the digits flickered before him, something shifted. No one had come close to the balance this account now held, not even remotely. His eyes widened further as he processed the amount, and a slow realization dawned on him: This month was different. This woman had dared to dream in ways no one else had before. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, but it was tinged with a hint of disbelief. She’s a brave soul, he thought, his mind racing through possibilities. Maybe a bit too brave. The audacity of it, the boldness. It was both impressive and alarming. It was as though she had no fear of the consequences, no hesitation in reaching for something far beyond what he ever anticipated.

Gretchen

The screen froze in silent hesitation. All eyes were focused on the image. The tall woman looked up, a question in her gaze directed at the two tall men. They shook their heads not knowing what had just transpired.

Suddenly, the screen went black, a slight glow appearing around the edges that began to flicker. The message appeared, the words slapping Gretchen right in the face. “Insufficient Funds.” She was in disbelief, her mind racing in anger. “How could this happen? It said to dream big, so I did. One Hundred Million is barely enough to last me the rest of my life. Let me try again,” she hissed, reaching for the device that was quickly rolled up and tucked away in the tall man’s pocket as he took a step back. “This is outrageous. I will sue you. Don’t you know who I am? Just wait. This is not over.”

The first tall man was the first to speak out as he stepped in between the two. “Frau Schumer. May I remind you that this is merely a game of chance. Unfortunately, you dreamt TOO big. There are no second chances.”

Gretchen continued to yell and scold the three tall people as they stood their ground. In the background, Johannes, anticipating her behavior to escalate, called in his security. Within minutes, three large security personnel surrounded Gretchen on the catwalk and proceeded to escort her away from the premises, all the while her demanding more answers.

An hour later, the world witnessed the unforeseen chain of events that was captured on video. Gretchen, her name boldly displayed on the screen with her amount and reaction, was breaking records on the internet. The model from Düsseldorf was in the news again, but not in the way she wanted. Kicking the bags and boxes of newly purchased, expensive items from earlier that day, Gretchen was furious at the headline that fanned out over the video. “Third participant of Blank Check misses out. One Hundred Million; Check Bounces.”

Tom & Felicia

It didn’t take long for Tom and Felicia to huddle together, eagerly pressing play on the video. The buzz had spread like wildfire among their friends, and they were desperate to see what had everyone so riled up. When Tom’s eyes landed on the screen, he was struck dumb. There, standing confidently on the catwalk, was his mother, poised as if born to model the latest high-fashion trends. The way she locked eyes with the camera, her gaze sharp and calculating just before she wrote her amount, sent a shiver crawling down Tom’s spine. That look, so brimming with arrogance, was unmistakable.

It clicked. The cryptic message from earlier that day finally made sense. Tom knew his mother all too well, and it hit him like a ton of bricks: she would have already been spending that money as if she had already won it. A wave of sympathy washed over him, whoever crossed her path in the coming weeks was in for a storm.
